Position Summary/Overview:
The person is this role will be the lead engineer on the network side of the infrastructure team, reporting to the Systems and Infrastructure manager. As well as participating in systems projects, the Senior Systems Engineer is also responsible for helping to maintain firewalls, switches and global WAN. He/she will install and configure core business applications and services including VMware, Citrix, VPN, Storage, Servers, Active Directory and Exchange. This position requires eight years of experience in the combined areas of network and systems engineering, troubleshooting and program installation/management. Network documentation will also be a critical component of this position.
Responsibilities:
- Install, configure and maintain core business applications and services including: VMware, Storage, Firewall LAN/WAN, Switches, Servers, Active Directory and Exchange
- Manage server-based applications delivery environment
- Coordinate the activities related to disaster recovery planning and testing as well as perform such testing
- Continuously review and revise disaster recovery procedures to reflect network growth and development
- Maintain accurate network diagrams for LAN, WAN, remote locations, email flow, and other topologies which require a visual aid
- Perform and/or assist in advanced level troubleshooting of applications used by the business
- Examine and evaluate new technical products and services
- Research solutions to existing network access and performance challenges
- Discover ways to leverage existing software and to optimize health and efficiency of mailing and data systems
- Align projects with goals of the business and own from design through deployment
- Work with Help Desk to resolve advanced level technical issues
- Provide advanced level support to all users when there are coverage lapses
- Draft, maintain and update detailed policies and procedures related to system and infrastructure changes
- Must be able to think critically and strategically and work around roadblocks
- Ensure that changes to systems adhere to company security policy
- Adhere to company change control policy and processes by making changes to DEV, QA, production
- Independently prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
- Create detailed, well written procedures
Education & Experience:
- BS/BA or equivalent
- MCSE, MCSA or equivalent
- 8+ years of network experience in Firewall configuration, Cisco switch configuration and high level of technical experience in global WAN connectivity
- Palo Alto, Checkpoint or Cisco ASA firewall design and management
- Cisco nexus/catalyst switches
- VMWare ESXi architecture, administration and troubleshooting skills (VDI a plus)
- Installing, configuring and managing virtual machines
- Fiber channel/ISCSI SAN design, configuration, deployment and management (familiarity with Nimble, Hitachi and EMC a plus)
- Active Directory design and administration including DNS, WINS, replication, permissions
- Microsoft Exchange design and administration
- Global remote connectivity design and support
- Advanced level of Windows 365 server experience
- Working directly with and closely monitoring consultants and vendors
- Proven ability to work independently on multiple projects
- Adhere to and experience with stringent change management policies and controls
- Strong project management experience
Advanced troubleshooting skills - Ability and desire to work with others and share knowledge
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Flexible work schedule outside normal business hours (24/7 support environment)
- Ethernet topology including switches, routers, MPLS, firewalls and latency/bandwidth issues
- VPN setup, troubleshooting and support
- Disaster Recovery experience is also highly desirable
