Chief Information Officer (CIO)/Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

Job Abstract

Our client is seeking a Chief Technology Officer to join their executive management team. The Chief Technology Officer will quickly learn and directly contribute to the growth of our client’s business at an executive level.   They will partner with their business counterparts and drive business improvements through technological innovation.

The ideal individual will be forward thinking, dynamic, and capable of nurturing ideas from concept to delivery. They feel comfortable communicating at every level in the organization and being an active participant in both business and technology discussions.

We are looking for an individual with strong leadership experience maturing IT from doing break/fix and empowering users to providing enterprise-wide solutions.  As part of this transformation, they must be able to create, explain, develop, and implement a holistic vision and strategy for IT.

The right individual must learn the business and welcome the opportunity to listen to a client call or actively engage in “town hall” meetings throughout the organization on technology issues.  They are equally excited about debating the merits of AI as brainstorming how to improve staff productivity.  They clearly articulate, in non-tech speak, options for delivering user requests and have their own opinion as to the best method.

The Chief Technology Officer must have strong people management skills with direct experience in managing successful IT delivery organizations.  They will possess excellent talent management skills having successfully implemented a scalable IT organization capable of leveraging external resources where needed.  They will motivate, lead by example, and be the champion of IT and IT staff.

This person will have a proven track record in making difficult, cost-conscious technical investments while advancing the technological portfolio of the organization.  This person needs the technical knowledge to understand proposals and be willing to challenge (when needed) vendors and staff.

Administrative functions of this position include managing the budget, staff management, planning the utilization of resources, and playing an active role in planning the technical direction of the IT development and database environment for the next 2 – 5 years.  This individual must be able to identify gaps in methodologies to provide continuous improvement, efficiencies, and “Lessons Learned” within the team.

This role will be remote and available for travel to global offices, when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of ~20 technology resources. Some will be direct staff, some matrixed, and some outsourced
  • Create and execute a Strategic IT Plan
  • Assist in organizational planning and staff recruiting
  • Budget and resource management (i.e., annual planning, staff reviews, project portfolio management)
  • Initiate and provide leadership, strategic/tactical direction and planning input on all information technology and business area issues and in the development of an IT environment which meets current and anticipated business requirements and objectives.
  • Gain consensus on technical decisions and ensure that appropriate IT practices are employed to deliver high quality results

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree and 15+ years of relevant work experience
    • Prior experience as a CIO or CTO or a direct report to either
    • At least 5 years with managerial responsibility for at least 20 global IT staff, managed services providers, and a multi-million dollar budget
    • Day-to-day experience working at the executive-level of a $200+ million organization
    • Support of 500+ users
  • Proven experience implementing a project management and business analysis methodology
  • Experience selecting, negotiating, on-boarding, and managing multiple managed services providers
  • Experience managing Corporate Systems (Finance, HR, Sales, Executive) users, applications they require, and data they need
  • Prior experience (at some point in the individual’s career) with the following:
    • Project Management
    • Business Analysis
  • Proven experience leading IT and user transformations (Change Management)
  • Demonstrated capabilities in creating, owning, and executing on a strategic IT plan and bring transparency for the plan and plan progress to the entire company
  • An executive-level, mature individual who has strong interpersonal skills including:
    • the ability to develop effective working relationships with others
    • a demonstrated customer focus
    • teamwork skills
    • a willingness to share technical and business knowledge with team members
    • a demonstrated ability to resolve conflict
    • effective problem solving skills
    • ability to make fact-based decisions
